Final design

Here are my presentation boards showing the final design.

I felt that it was important to show the product in context, given that user interaction is key to the design. In doing so, I attempted to market the product for a hot summers day.

Development

The idea that I chose to develop is the bottle that folds into a handheld fan after the water has been consumed.

I feel that this would be a useful product, since the main times that I would actually buy a bottle of water is if I am playing sport, or am unusually dehydrated from the hot weather - which are both times that I would like to be cooled down.

The concept was inspired by origami, and I experimented with shapes and folds by looking at some online tutorials.
After playing around with paper sections and sticking parts together with tape, I developed the form for the final product.
I made a plastic mock-up to test the form and functionality, finding that the idea worked.

I also reverse engineered an H2O 'pop top' bottle to understand how the nozzle worked. These findings were applied to design of the spinning top, which was developed to reduce the effort required by the user to cool themselves with air.

Initial ideas

Here are my initially ideas for the first project: the water bottle with a secondary function.

In order to design a useful and desirable product, I first thought about the times when people would buy a water bottle, such as playing sport, experiencing hot weather, having no access to running water etc.
Then I tried to imagine that I was in each of these situations, to understand what other uncomfortable conditions might be experienced.

I figured that the water bottle would be valuable product it its secondary function could reduce these feelings of discomfort.
For example, 'no access to running water' could mean that they are living in a developing country, so they also have no access to electricity or a convenient mobile light source. Therefore, a bottle that folded into a candle holder that could be be carried easily and protects the candle from wind might be useful.

Come inside my headspace..

.. and you will find a collection of my ideas, thoughts and explorations.

Follow me through the experimental stages and witness my products grow into their final form.

At the moment I am working on a drink bottle design with a secondary function: so get involved in the developmental process - I'm thirsty for your knowledge.
